John Early releases Now More Than Ever, the comedy album companion to his hit 2023 HBO standup special of the same, on September 13, and in addition to a lot of jokes it also features John and his band covering songs by Madonna, Aaliyah, Dolly Parton/Porter Wagoner, and Donna Summer. He’s just made a video for his cover of Aaliyah’s rather blantant sexy slow-jam “Rock the Boat.”
Directed by Emily Allan & Leah Hennessey, the video is set at rehearsals for John’s upcoming tour, but there is more than a little sexual tension in the air as, on his way in, John has a phone conversation with one his band members he’s having a secret affair with.
“When you get here you gotta be discrete,” John says. “I don’t think I’m ready to tell the other guys in the band about us yet.” What follows is six minutes of hilarious knowing glances, innuendo, unsubtle come-ons with every member of the band, not to mention some questionable choreography.
